The Creator of Melvin Speaks
Hi, I’m the creator of Melvin.
I hope to enlighten you a little with this on why and how I came up with Mel, and possibly sway you into reading the comics.
Melvin is a slight variation of the standard nerd. His potential to be cool is completely eclipsed by his overbearing “idea of cool”. If you like Ketchup on salad, Melvin will totally understand, if you think it would be wise to take a break from the computer and go for a rejuvenating stroll, Melvin may be swayed to switch to his Gameboy and headphones. But only after he has checked his e-mail, facebook, twitter, g-mail, igoogle, and of course made updates to his blog on WordPress. He has an imaginary friend (a giant talking robin) who helps him decipher the world outside of the computer.
Before getting started on visualizing a Melvin strip, I will take my time. I listen for the tone of Melvin’s voice in his speech and try to emulate the kind of narcissism he exudes. I must figure out his ultimate disinterest in everything unrelated to online gaming, mainly to what degree.
Some of the subjects for the comics are rough and I must admit he some how clicks (wait that might be his mouse). He’s not weak he’s just very misguided, and who wouldn’t be after taking orders from a video game his entire life.
The inspiration for Melvin came from my school where I was surrounded by nerdiness in the digital art program and have started to notice some changes in my own cool demeanor as well. You may never wonder what specularity is, but I know.
So a little disclaimer: The Goal is to entertain. If anything offends; the only reaction at hand is to be drawn inexorably in, whence you will invariably find the hidden truth. Or the other way around, lol. (I really don’t know any hidden truths).
